Two Words to Help You Bounce Back, After a Rough Start to Your Day

I used to hate it when people would say that “Francie got up on the wrong side of the bed”.  I think I hated it most, because I didn’t know how to “get back in the bed” and find the “right side” of whatever bed they were talking about.

I felt stuck.  Stuck in my bad mood, my bad morning, my bad whatever.

And today, I feel stuck “on the wrong side of the bed.”

All I can think about on days like this, is that I want another pot of coffee.

But, if you have a few kids, or a job, or full day of things to do, and you happen to “get up on the wrong side of the bed”, life still requires you to move forward.

How do you bounce back from a rough start to your day?

There are two words I heard in the quiet of my heart this morning, as I held my heavy breathing baby while she finished her asthma treatment.  (And after I had very little sleep with my other sick girl, and already snapped at the older boy who woke up early as I tried to get my coffee and quiet with the whining chorus of “I’m starving”… And add to that the gloom that this rainy day threatens to bring, as it keep this exhausted mom and her clan of preschoolers inside, all.day.long.)

I heard these two words break into my morning funk: Lean in.

Not a Sheryl Sandberg’s type of leaning in, but a gentle, gracious voice that invited me to start over.  He simply said:

My child,

Lean in to ME.

Lean out of yourself, and in to My strength, in to My peace, in to My mercy.

My mercy for you, My mercy for those sleepless kids, My mercy for this rainy day.

Lean in.

It’s the only way to survive a day like this, and its the only way to thrive every other day too.

My Spirit of power and love resides in you.  I am alive and present, living in you.  Lean into Me.  Don’t try to do it all alone, focusing your attention on yourself and everything that seems hard.  Get absorbed into Me; leaning into the grace and power I offer for today.  I promise, it is enough.

Today’s going to be a great day.  Let’s just do it together.  Your re-start button is here, and now.

Simply lean in to Me.”

~ God ~

Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God.

It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!…
